I finished reading Sibbie O’Sullivan’s “My Private Lennon” a few weeks ago and am still thinking about it. This perceptive autoethnography joins an emerging body of work by women authors who challenge the male-defined history of Beatlemania. Rather than ridicule or condescend to female fan “hysteria”, O’Sullivan considers the Beatle’s compelling alternative to entrenched alpha male masculinity. O’Sullivan documents how she incorporated this influence into her thinking so that the Fab Four’s effect never dissipates, but instead continues to influence her preferences and choices. I hope that more women document their fan experience. Like Sibbie, I was there. And what I remember very clearly was not sexual histrionics or plaintive longing--it was joy! This is an incredibly candid and profoundly personal reminiscence of a pivotal time in the author's life. What resonates with me is the look back on a life and seeing those meaningful experiences that put the author on the road to adulthood. So many masterful turns of phrases stopped me in my tracks: "The effect [the Beatles] had on me felt like an unexpected acceleration in the future.
